Step 9: When and When NOT to Use Analytics
We thought you may need a little break from the technical tool How-To’s and get a little more philosophical as we near the end….the comments have kept me company … so keep them coming as this continues!
It seems strange that I would even be broaching the topic … WHEN to use Analytics. You might think I will say ALL THE TIME. ALWAYS BE DATA DRIVEN. WHAT IS NOT MEASURED IS NOT MANAGED!!!
Well you know, sometimes things ARE left unmanaged…so why take the time to measure it?
Want to know your Top Content – we got you covered there and Top can even be thought of by quantity, engagement, or onpage activity. Through this short 10-step program we hope you learned the brush strokes on how to use the new enhanced data to learn more about what your users are doing than you did before. We hope we got you addicted!
Now that you know though … are you gonna do something about it?
If you learn that those partners that begged you to put their links on their page are not being clicked on … are you going to change them out to avoid the clutter and increase CTR to better areas?
If you learn that your long-form content is not getting the scroll rate you had hoped … are you going to come up with a few variations to test and improve page layout?
IF a majority of your traffic is coming from “low performing” sources, lets just say social media … will you still keep spending your days posting and liking and pimping on Pinterest, FB and more or start working on getting more actual backlinks from referring sources or improving SEO which can last for a long time once nailed….since those users tend to have more engagement and on-page activity?
YES I WILL….WHEW … OK … you get it
If you are just looking at this data because you are curious and makes you feel good about distributing content to the world. AWESOME! DON’T STOP! I don’t need to tell you how many people you are impacting (Your Monthly Users) However, we certainly prefer you start to take ACTION on the data. That is when you REALLY SHOULD look at analytics.
A small secret, data is about cause and effect. Try things … look back on the data … and see if that worked or not. Try new post topics, go back and revise old posts, switch out outbound links, new product layouts, etc. (Careful I mind you, making too many changes at once then makes it impossible to see what actually influenced the change.) Then look to see if the needle changed. NOW you can go back … look at the data in context and see if your change made a dent in the data. NO more not wanting to try new things because you don’t know if it will work … now you will know with certainty and can keep repeating what you did (or stop and move on of course).
So in summary, when should I use Analytics? When you make a change, When you want to improve, When you are ready to start growing. So yeah, a lot 🙂
